Sheriff Cabral Delivers Safety Message, Senior ID Program To Revere Seniors

Over the course of recent weeks, Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral has toured through the City of Revere visiting groups of seniors to deliver her message of public safety.

Addressing residents of the Jack Satter House, the Friendly Gardens Co–Op, and the Rossetti Cowan Senior Center, Sheriff Cabral presented the Department’s "Crime Prevention Tips For Seniors " – a booklet that provides the reader with safety advice that can help them to avoid identity theft, telephone scams, property theft, muggings, and other crimes and abuses that are heavily targeted at seniors. The Crime Prevention Tips For Seniors booklet also contains important contacts for several public safety agencies, which seniors can utilize in the event that they have been the victims of a crime or scam.

Sheriff Cabral Brings Safety Message To Retired Teachers

Recently, Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral visited the Boston Teacher’s Union to speak with members of the Retired Teachers Chapter (RTC) about some of the safeguards and security precautions they can take in order to help them avoid becoming the victims of crime.

Touching upon the specific kinds of crimes that seniors are often targeted for, Sheriff Cabral offered several concrete actions for seniors to employ to help prevent against identity theft, robberies, email and telephone scams, muggings, and other dangers.

“It is important to protect your personal information at all times,” said Sheriff Cabral, warning of the growing threat of identity theft among seniors. “All they need from you is your name and your social security number – with those, they can open credit cards in your name, steal medical coverage and defraud you in other ways.”

Sheriff Cabral participates in annual Walk for Dudley

Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral recently took part in the annual “Walk for Dudley” in Roxbury.

The Walk, which originated in 2005 and spans 2.5 miles around the Dudley Street area, is a fundraising pledge event that celebrates and supports the neighborhood’s community– based organizations that have been working to transform the Dudley St. area into a vibrant urban village.

To this end, the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) – “a nonprofit community–based planning and organizing entity rooted in the Roxbury/North Dorchester neighborhoods of Boston” – organized the Walk as a means to show support for the community by highlighting the accomplishments achieved by residents and non–profit agencies, and to give residents and visitors the opportunity to get involved in future planning for the area.

Brasfield to lead Cabral re-election campaign

Dorchester native Freda Brasfield has been tapped to manage Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral's re-election campaign. Brasfield is the Regional Coordinator for Mayor Thomas Menino's Office of Neighborhood Services and will take a leave of absence beginning Friday, October 1.

Cabral has known Brasfield for several years and said her smarts, energy and credentials motivated her to offer the job. "Freda's fantastic with a well-deserved reputation for getting the job done right. She's a saavy political veteran, fast on her feet and a perfect choice to lead this campaign."

A longtime political activist and community organizer, Brasfield has worked on campaigns for Presidents Obama and Clinton, the late Senator Edward Kennedy, Governor Deval Patrick, Mayor Menino and numerous local races.

Sheriff Cabral recognized with “Above and Beyond” Award by U.S. Department of Defense

Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral recently received the “Above and Beyond” Award from the United States Department of Defense Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve committee.

Presented to Sheriff Cabral by Gerard Hayes, Ombudsman for the Massachusetts Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), the Above and Beyond Award is given to employers “at the state and local level who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements for granting leave and providing support for military duty by their employees.”

Sheriff Cabral Honored With “Torchbearer” Award

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral was recently honored, along with several other distinguished guests, during the 2010 Empower Peace Awards. Held inside the State Room in Downtown Boston’s Sixty State Street building, the event was hosted by the organization’s Women2Women’s International Young Women’s Leadership Program.

Receiving the “Torchbearer” award, Sheriff Cabral was honored for her “commitment to promoting the status of women worldwide.” Along with Sheriff Cabral, awardees also included Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, State Senator Joan Menard, and Todd Patkin, President of Todd G. Patkin Companies.

Introduced by Rick Rendon, founder of Empower Peace and Senior Partner of The Rendon Group, Sheriff Cabral stepped to the podium to receive her award and to speak about her appreciation of the organization hosting the ceremony.

Sheriff Cabral, Department Lend Support For National Night Out

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral and members of the custody and non–custody staff of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department took part in several National Night Out events throughout the neighborhoods of Boston, Chelsea, and Revere.

An annual celebration, National Night Out is a program that cultivates and strengthens partnerships among the community, youth, police, city agencies and community–based organizations. National Night Out also acknowledges the remarkable contributions of Neighborhood Watch groups, and seeks to increase participation in Neighborhood Watch programs among local residents.

Sheriff Cabral Speaks At City Year Summer Academy

Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral recently addressed members of City Year at the close of the City Year Summer Academy.

As the organization’s official annual retreat, the Summer Academy brings together City Year staff and senior corps members from around the country and affiliate nations to network, share knowledge and collaborate. Members also utilize the time together to share best practices, reconnect with the mission and values of City Year and to review major strategies and objectives for the coming year.

Sheriff Cabral Addresses Annual Fields Corner Main Street Assembly

Recently, Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral provided the guest address at the annual meeting of the Fields Corner Main Street Association, held inside the multi–purpose room at the Dorchester House Multi–Service Center.

Founded in 2000, Fields Corner Main Street (FCMS) works to enhance and promote the historic commercial district of Fields Corner in partnership with local businesses, residents and community groups.

Introduced by FCMS Board President Lee Adelson to thunderous applause, Sheriff Cabral began her presentation by offering meeting participants the recently released “Common Ground: A Progress Report of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department,” a comprehensive document that spans the time between 2004 and 2010, and focuses on the remarkable work that is being done inside the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department facilities.

Sheriff Cabral Speaks Out For Gender Responsive Programming

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral recently delivered the keynote address during an event organized to support legislation with the goal of fostering gender responsive programming.

Held at the Massachusetts State House as part of "The Girls’ Initiative Advocacy Day," the purpose of the meeting was to shed light on the need for change with respect to policies and regulations as they relate to system involved girls and young women, and to support Bill H3418.
